Drop Biscuits and Blue Jeans

I make terrible biscuits. I don't know why but I can never get it right. My biscuits come out hard and crumbly instead of soft and fluffy. My husband's grandma makes The. Best. Biscuits. She's been making them from scratch EVERY MORNING for almost 70 years...since she was a little girl. My husband said she'd make a "baby biscuit" just for him. He loved getting that little biscuit when he'd stay with his grandparents for a week every summer. I've been trying to learn the recipe so I can make them for my family the way she did for hers. But I suck at it. She has the magic touch or something. My dough always seems on track until the rolling out stage so when I found his recipe for drop biscuits, I was excited at the prospect of having fresh biscuits that were actually edible and you just drop the dough on the cookie sheet and bake, no rolling required. And they were WONDERFUL. Soft and fluffy, buttery clouds of awesomeness. They don't touch the biscuits Mawmaw makes but they'll do for now.

Buttery Drop Biscuits

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
3/4 cup butter
1 1/4 cup milk (I used homemade buttermilk)

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. In a large bowl stir together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and cream of tartar. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add milk all at once. Using a fork, stir just until moistened.

Drop biscuits 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes or until golden. Remove biscuits from baking sheet and serve warm.

We ate ours with homemade butter and honey...soooo good.

I did some coupon shopping today. I actually don't coupon as much as I used to because I make a lot of my food from scratch. And while I find Bisquick coupons, I don't typically find coupons for flour and buttermilk. But, I coupon as much as I can and I only buy stuff I need. Today I went to my local Kroger store to stock up on some lunch items for my husband and dad. I pack them a lunch everyday for work.

Total before coupons/member card was 320 dollars. I paid 200 for everything and that included 5 Women's Quattro razors that I got for free.

Not a bad haul! I saved over 100 bucks with coupons and only half my items were bought using a coupon...everything was on sale, though.

Not only that but today I got my Target jeans in that I bought on their "Daily Deals" tab last week! One of my coupon/deal websites I subscribe to alerted me to a GREAT sale on Mossimo jeans. Four pairs of jeans for 24 dollars with free shipping. And they fit DARN GOOD for 6 dollar jeans! I'm all set for Fall with these puppies!

I've been slacking on the posts lately and I'm sorry about that. My youngest daughter got in a fight with our coffee table...with her face...and ended up with a black-eye. Between that and the three molars breaking through at once, she's been rather cranky. And me, too. Not only that but we got our XBox 360 with Kinect and I've been PWNING the Prince of Persia game. It's my favorite console game EVER. I've also been tearing up some Dance Central, that game is a WORKOUT! I feel the burn. I gotta work off those biscuits somehow.

I don't have a pastry blender. Can you use a food processor or stand mixer? I want to make some biscuits for Thanksgiving.
I'm sure a food processor would work just fine!
