Tissue Paper Butterfly Craft

My girls love butterflies...as do most little girls. But seeing that it's Winter, we don't see a lot of them. Every morning, I let June choose a theme for the day, and we do crafts, activities, and themed lunches around that theme. This morning was butterflies. This craft was easy and cheap and kept them occupied for a good hour.

Tissue Paper Butterflies

Supplies

Tissue paper cut into rectangles (I cut a big sheet in quarters)
Yarn

How to Assemble:




Gather each tissue paper rectangle in the center and tie with yarn. Fluff the wings a bit and you're done!




Then just hold them up and let them go! You can even toss them for some height and let the kids chase and catch them. Make smaller butterflies and use a net to catch them.

"Sofia the First" Princess Day!

We are big fans of Disney Juniors "Sofia the First." Yes, we...I'm actually guilty of watching the new episode while the girls nap. Of course, my girls love princesses in general, so this show was an easy sale.

To celebrate a new episode, I planned a day of fun princess crafts and activities. Here's what we did!

Fan, Crown, and Bracelet Decorating






I took some white card-stock and traced around a large mixing bowl. Then used a glass to trace a small circle, making a fan shape.


Then I used the glass to make three half-circles on another sheet of cardstock, making the front of the crown. I used cut another strip of card-stock to make the back and taped the pieces together.


Then I let June decorate her fan, crown, and bracelet as she saw fit. She drew roses because that's what the princesses did on the "Royal Sleepover" episode. =)


We changed into some princess gowns and did a little waltzing with our new accessories on!





I even made myself a crown and fan. I was "Queen Mommy" and the girls curtsied to me and called me "Your Majesty." It was too cute. Anytime I spoke to them, I referred to them as "Princess Amber" and "Princess Sofia."



Royal Tea Party

For lunch, we had a royal tea party. I broke out the tablecloth, my vintage china, and some tea party foods. 

A teapot of Chocolate Milk was a big hit at the party.I used the girl's plastic tea party tower tray for the food.

Flower cupcakes, peanut butter-banana-honey tea sandwiches, and grapes.



After lunch was nap time but once they girls woke up, we watched Cinderella together and ate Kettle Corn. The girls loved it.

June still carries around her fan and wears her crown all day long. She's made a few more since this and now refers to them as her "collection" of crowns. =)

 













Smothered Cabbage Tutorial

This is a simple side dish for you cabbage-lovers out there (and those who think they hate cabbage)! It's only 3 ingredients and it's delicious! My favorite way to cook cabbage!

Smothered Cabbage

Ingredients

1 onion, thinly sliced
1 head of cabbage, washed and chopped
1/2 cup chicken stock (or water)
2 Tbs oil
Salt and Pepper

Step 1

Heat the oil in a large pot. Add the chopped onion and cabbage.

Step 2

Pour the chicken stock (or water) over the cabbage and season with a little salt and pepper. (You can add more seasoning after it's cooked).

Step 3


Turn the heat down to medium-low and cover, stirring occasionally, and cook for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the cabbage is soft.

Step 4


Season the cooked cabbage with salt and pepper to taste, serve hot.




"You Shall Not Pass" Toilet Paper Sign!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has struggled with my child over how much toilet paper they should take when they use the potty. Sometimes I go in there and my 3 year old will have a toilet FULL of paper...most of the roll gone in one sitting. =/ That's when we created this sign. "You shall not PASS!" It gives her a visual limit of paper she's allowed to use. She unrolls the paper until it reaches the sign and that's how much she takes.

The paper tears from the back of the roll and gives her 5 double-quilted sheets to work with. More than enough for her but less than 100 feet. Haha!

Chocolate Cream Pie Tutorial

I'm always in the mood for chocolate. And when I'm in the mood for chocolate, this recipe is one of my Top 5. Easy to whip together and chilled and ready to eat in a few hours.

Chocolate Cream Pie

Ingredients


1 (9 inch) graham cracker pie crust
3 egg yolks, beaten
1 1/2 cups white sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups milk
1 tablespoon butter
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed


Step 1

 
In a large mixing bowl, cream together egg yolks and sugar. Mix in cornstarch, cocoa powder, and salt. Add milk and stir gently.

Step 2




Place your mixing bowl over a pot of simmering water, stirring the chocolate mixture constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in butter or margarine and vanilla extract. 

Step 3


Once the filling has cooled slightly, pour into graham cracker crust. Lay a sheet of saran wrap over the pie to prevent a skin forming on the filling. (It won't stick to the filling when you're ready to remove it).

Step 4

Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight. Top with whipped cream and serve.
