Want to be in my upcoming book?

If you follow me on Facebook, you might be aware that I'm currently writing a book. A Guide to Homemaking, if you will. I've already completed a rough outline and am starting on the first draft. So far, I'm up to 15 chapters, each filled with recipes, checklists, tips/tricks, and tons of inspiration. But I want more. That's where you come in.

Every one has their own tried and true tips and tricks. Either for cooking, gardening, cleaning, first aid, raising children, and even advice for a long and happy marriage. All of these things, we've learned along the way. We've been taught by our mothers, grandmothers, dads, and even our own kids have taught us valuable lessons. There's no way I could think up all these tricks on my own. But I want to put these down on paper so women who weren't taught them can have an entire book of them at their disposal. I want these traditions to be passed down somewhere. What better place than a Guide to Homemaking?

Here's what you need to do. In the comments section of this post, tell me your favorite or most useful tip/trick/advice you've gotten in your life.  Keep it simple. Also, include your name, state where you live, and age...also if you can remember, try to include who you learned it from (i.e. mother, grandmother, pastor). I'd love to include as many as possible in the book. If your tip makes it in, I'll include your name and last initial and the other info I asked you to include.

Homemaking is becoming a lost art but I don't want the decade of information to disappear, too.

Now, think hard ladies (and gents) and lets get back to the basics!

Before I got married, my mom gave me the BEST marriage advice in the world and it's SO true. She said "There will be days in your marriage when your husband can do no wrong and you love him and every strand of his DNA. Then there will be days when you want to punch him in the face and kick him in the balls. But at the end of the day, remember you married him for a reason and also remember those days when you love him through and through."

Never go to bed angry at your spouse. Told to me by my mother and many other wise women in my life. Sounds simple enough. There were times early on in our marriage when we had disagreements and arguments but I always remembered those words and we always found a way to "kiss and make up". We have been very happily married for 16 years now and we are just like newlyweds. Jennifer W, Sulphur, LA 38 years old

I chop all of my favorite seasonings in the food processor. A bag of Onions, a few bell pepper, garlic, celery, parsley, etc. I add a small amount of water to make it a little soupy and stir. I pour the mixture into old ice cube trays and freeze. When they're frozen i crack the trays and store the cube in a ziploc bag. When I cook, no matter how small the portion, I always have fresh seasonings available to add. I just drop in a few cubes!

Leave the dirty dishes in the sink. Leave the
dirt on the floors. Hold your babies, rock them,
Kiss and cuddle them! They will be gone before

Are you including anything about mending or sewing?
The one tip I live by is to label EVERYTHING!! I do this in my classroom and home. Nobody has to ask where something goes.
I can't wait to see it in print.
I recently got ahold of several bound copies of old Home Economics magazines from the 40's and love them.
The most powerful message we can give to others isn't a testimony or a sermon . It is the life we live when we are deeply hurt, the pressure is on and things are not going our way. Trust, rest, abide in Him. ~

My mother always had "best and worst" time at bed. We told her the best thing that happened, and how it made us feel. Then we told her the worst thing that happened (no matter how trivial). It was a good way to learn to solve problems and how to forgive others. Something simple, but lasting. I think it has helped me control my feelings and learn how to deal with little everyday dilema's.

If you aren’t sure how fresh your eggs are, place them in about four inches of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If only one end tips up, the egg is less fresh and should be used soon. If it floats, it’s past the fresh stage.

Vinegar is a great fabric softener. Especially if line drying your clothes.

Also works well in removing mold and mildew in the bathroom.

Baking soda is a really handy and inexpensive household cleaner and deodorizer.

When cleaning house, make a large circle out of it. It saves steps and time in the end. Starting at one end of the cleaning a room to the end as you go. Keeping a garbage bag and hamper handy to move items to their proper homes as you reach each destination. Also remember to clean top to bottom. Dirt falls down not up! Saving the hoovering for last.

Flip your mattress when you change your clocks!(or every six months)As well as changing the battery in your smoke detectors!

Best kid advice, whatever it takes for your child to have a restful sleep..let them have it! It doesn't matter if they love to sleep with daddy's day old sweaty t- shirt. big whoop! They won't be taking that t shirt on their honeymoon I promise :-) (I've been married 25 years and have two children a 25 year old son and a 12 year old daughter. The son does not request his dads t shirts..)

No need to include my name and such..as I can't recall where I heard it all to begin with. :-)

When my daughter was little and she had all those cute little bum covers for her dresses, I used a binder clip to attach it to the dress. Saved me losing them. I used that method until she got into sizes that no longer had Bum covers! Never lost one!!!

Advice for siblings starting young...My great grandma, Little Mawmaw, who raised four stair steps on a Texas ranch gave me this tid-bit when my two older babies were little. "When they fight, have them hug and or kiss and say they are sorry and mean it!"

Advice for getting your teenager to NOT wear something without the fight: My co-worker who had three teenaged daughters at once gave me this treasure when my daughter was a tween. "If you don't want your daughters wearing something tell them I like that outfit but it kinda makes you look fat." Ingenious or what?! I have been married almost 20 years and still use the same everyday china I received for wedding gifts. I was getting aggrivated about the dark grey knife marks and heard from a sweet lady at my church who lived through the depression (and thought 20 year old china was NEW!) that I should just take some baking soda and my usual washing sponge----SCRUB! Wa---laa! Almost like new and no marks left by my angry little cutters! Ha ha!

My mom told me when I started having children and getting very busy with life...
Always do one load of laundry a day. If you do at least one load a day, you will never be overwhelmed by dirty laundry and will always be on top of it.
This has been a golden nugget for me. No matter how crazy my days are sometimes, I can always get one load done. I'm never behind on it. I've told many a young mom like me the same thing, and they all do it now.

We play the "High/Low" game at dinner. We go around the table and each of us shares what the favorite thing that happened "the high" and what was the thing we disliked the most " the low." Gets us all talking, sharing and EVEN shows that in even in the worst of days...there is always a high. The kids have been doing this from pretty much birth ...even when you couldn't understand what they were saying they had their turn to share and they knew it was thier turn an would babble away. Gets you past the question of "what did you do today?" and answer "I dunno". Denise From Alberta, Canada (Picked this up from a women at a book study who mentioned it)
