Homemade Crust Tutorial (Two ways)

I figured I'd do a separate tutorial on making the pie crust for my Apple Pie.  You can also omit the sugar to make a crust for savory dishes like quiches or chicken pot pies!

First, a tutorial on making it by hand:

Pie Crust- by hand

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup butter, cubed
Glass of ice water
Pastry blender

Step 1

In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cubed butter.

Step 2

With a pastry blender, begin cutting the butter into the flour, until the butter is the size of peas.

Step 3

Begin adding the ice water, 1 Tbs at a time, tossing with a fork. Using a total of 6 or 7 Tbs total. Until dough is moistened.

Step 4

Shape into a ball and wrap in Saran Wrap or a Ziploc bag. Refrigerate until ready to use. You might need to knead it a bit when it comes out of the fridge to soften it up before trying to roll it out.

Now it's basically the same with a food processor, only faster:

Pie Crust- with Food Processor

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup butter, cubed
1/3 cup of ice cold water

Step 1

Add the flour, sugar, salt, and butter to your food processor with steel blade attached.

Step 2

Process with on/off pulses until the mixture resembles cornmeal with a few large chunks of butter mixed in.

Step 3

With processor running, pour the 1/3 cup ice water through the feeder quickly. Stop processing once all the water is in. Scrape sides, and pulse twice. Shape into ball and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until ready to use.
