Sweetened Condensed Milk into Caramel Sauce Tutorial

I had seen this idea on Pinterest and I decided to try it out myself! It produces a thick, rich, caramel sauce- or "dulce de leche" and it's fantastic!

Dulce de Leche (Caramel Sauce)

Start with an unopened can of Sweetened Condensed Milk. Peel the label off.

Submerge it in water in your CrockPot.

Let to low and cook for 8 hours. Move hot, unopened can to fridge and let cool.

Open can. Boom. Caramel Sauce. I'll be making some homemade ice-cream and swirl some of this through it. Yum!

Yummo!!! My mum used to do something similar to make banoffee pie, or anything else that required caramel. So much nicer than buying premade caramel.
Make sure can stays covered with water or it can explode. Happened on a camping trip and there was caramel everywhere.
I'm excited! I'm going to mix some in to my homemade icecream and use the rest to make some Caramel Coffee Creamer. Yay!

And that sounds like the best camping trip ever.

You can boil in a pan on the stove as well (three hours), but beware that sometimes it will leave a ring around the bottom where the cans were (as if someone traced the outline of the can). Bananas and graham crackers are great with this!!

Just make sure that you don't leave it on for too long. I think mine was in slow cooker for 10 hours (overnight) and it was really thick. It tasted yummy, but it was difficult to get it out of the can, once it had cooled.

can you use the fat free version of the condensed milk to make it more fat free? this sounds great and I have been searching for a recipe for the skinny caramel macchiato creamer and now I'ver found it! Thanks!
I dont see why not Sandy!

Love this idea. Do you need to heat it up if you use the homemade carmel sauce recipe.

When I was small, my Mom would make this as a treat for us....we didn't have alot of money and never had any kind of candy in the house...only sweets were hand made. She would spread it on a graham cracker and top it off with another cracker - like a sandwich. For Easter, she would make these and melt Choc Chips and drizzle choc on the top....what a treat!! We only had ice cream in the winter - home made - because we had alot of ice. My Mom also used this for ice cream topping. Thank you bringing back memories from 50+ years ago.

I just made homemade ice cream with it. It is so good, tastes like the caramel fudge ice cream I used to get at the local dairy years ago.

I Made it and it still tastes like sweetened condensed milk, but there is a slight caramel flavor but not much of one

I'm wondering if this can be made with homemade condensed milk, and if so, what type of container it should be in to cook in crockpot....
